Am I qualified to be a mentor?

  • YES! A common misconception for #CTN mentors is that they need to be “experts”. In our vision of flourishing students and a flourishing community, if you’re seeking to have positive impact and can offer students insights on your professional, academic or lived experience journey... then you’ll be the ideal person to help our students create diverse and innovative solutions
  • #ChangeTheNow Mentors can be Georgian College staff, community partners, Georgian alumni as well as current (and future) changemakers outside the Georgian College community


What is #ChangeTheNow?

  • #ChangeTheNow is a global movement that embraces the idea that small acts can lead to big change. At its heart is community collaboration that gives students an opportunity to build the digital collaboration literacy, soft skills and key competencies of sustainability as part of a changing workplace.
  • Students are placed in innovation teams of 4-5 and then assigned a mentor (that’s you) to support them in working together on a project related to at least one of the SDGs. Students will complete their project by applying their program-specific skills—with coaching support from you their mentor—to unlock the future they want to see in the world.
  • The #ChangeTheNow experience will introduce both students and mentors to new problem-solving methods such as design and systems thinking along with new collaboration and visual communication software. Students will also explore 21st century employability skills, career success, the changing world of work, social innovation, and changemaking through sessions and workshops specifically designed to support their #ChangeTheNow journey.


What are the SDGs?

  • The 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are an action plan for global change on a local scale. These 17 global goals are part of a collective initiative to redirect humanity towards a sustainable path to allow us to thrive together on this planet now and into the future

What is the expected commitment for mentors?

  • Mentors should expect to contribute between four to six hours per week from July 5 to August 13.
  • In the first couple of weeks, you’ll be focused on onboarding, training modules and introduction to your co-mentor, lead mentor and student teams
  • After that, you will meet with your teams weekly to help guide them towards their solutions


What is the timeframe for mentorship?

  • The mentorship element of #ChangeTheNow will run from July 5, 2021 through August 13, 2021.
  • Here is a brief overview of what each segment will look like:
    • July 5 to July 16 Mentor Onboarding, Complete Training Modules, and Meet Mentor Partner (approx. 4 hours) and meet student teams
    • July 19 to July 23: Changemaker-in-Residency Week (approx. 2 to 4 hours). Mentors have the option to participate in virtual skill-building workshops
    • July 26 to August 13: Weekly mentorship sessions (approx. 1 hour per team) with each of your teams to support their journey through the #ChangeTheNow Challenge.
    • Week of August 16: (Optional) Join an all-inclusive celebration for all participants and ideas!


What kind of support is being offered to mentors?

  • There are a few different levels of support offered to mentors and designed to ensure every mentor feels confident and empowered to offer positive impact to our students
  • Each mentor is assigned a LEAD mentor, who is a subject matter expert in the field of Human-Centered Design Thinking and the process of #ChangeTheNow that you can connect with to answer questions, receive guidance and exchange ideas with
  • Each mentor is also teamed up with a co-mentor, who can cover off a team meeting in case of unforeseen/urgent circumstances, as well as offer insights and learning from their own experience
  • Additionally, each mentor is welcome to join the Global Mentor Community of Practice (COP), a designated virtual meeting space where mentors from around the world connect to network, share experiences and ideas
  • Finally, each mentor is offered full training/onboarding support through our mentor onboarding process
    • Within this process you can access various modules, asynchronously, to help amplify your knowledge around elements of #ChangeTheNow such as Human-Centered Design Thinking and the UN SDGs


What is the Global Mentor Community of Practice (COP)?

  • Part of the value of mentorship also comes from networking and building relationships with other mentors
  • In addition to your co-mentor, each mentor will be given the chance to join the Global Community of Practice (COP) in order to network, exchange ideas and share learnings with each other

Who will I be paired with (co-mentor)?

  • Based on each mentors profile, we will pair mentors that can offer our students the most diverse, inclusive and valuable experience
  • Your co-mentor will serve as a sounding board throughout #ChangeTheNow, and you can offer each other “back-up” in the case of an unforeseen/urgent circumstance requires you to miss a student team mentoring session


Who will I be matched with (student #CTN teams)?

  • Each mentor pair (you and your co-mentor) are hand-matched to student teams based your backgrounds and the programs and projects that student team will be pursuing
  • Student teams will feature a diverse range of programs, perspectives and places along the academic journey, so matches will take into account various criteria, in order to ensure our students are offered the most robust learning experience


What would a typical week look like?

  • In your first 2 weeks, you will likely be focused on completing your onboarding and training modules while connecting with your co-mentor and lead mentor to ensure you are both comfortable and confident with the experience
  • During Changemaker in Residency Week (CRW), you will have the opportunity to join as many sessions/workshops as you would like to both further your own Professional Development as well as to gain insight on what your student teams will be learning
  • For the remainder of the commitment, you would seek to meet with each of your teams (and co-mentor) weekly, offering insights and helping to guide them through the rest of the #ChangeTheNow process
  • At the conclusion of the mentorship journey, you’re invited to join a celebration of all participants and their ideas as well as offered the chance to provide feedback on your experience and help inform future version of #ChangeTheNow


What might a typical mentoring session look like?

  • While every mentor and student team are welcome to approach and facilitate their sessions in whatever way is most optimal for them, a typical mentoring session might follow this kind of framework
    • 5 minutes: Check-in to see how everyone is doing – first as people, then as participants
    • 10-15 minutes: Teams would share what they worked on that week and some of the challenges (and breakthroughs) they experienced
    • 15-20 minutes: Mentor would offer feedback, insights and questions, based on their perspective and background, in order to deepen the level of exploration for the student teams
    • 10 minutes: Debrief the session to ensure everyone is on the same page and no other questions or concerns are lingering/left unanswered
    • 5 minutes: Confirmation of next steps for the team and when next meeting is scheduled


What if one of my teams doesn’t show up for a meeting?

  • You and your co-mentor would relay the situation to your lead mentor, who would let the appropriate Georgian College department know to follow up with the students
  • You are NOT expected to “manage” your student teams – you are simply there to enrich the students’ experience and learning


What if I have to cancel a meeting due to an unforeseen/urgent circumstance?

  • We completely understand that sometimes, “life” happens and can disrupt previous commitments and best-laid plans (this happens to students too!)
  • Ideally, your co-mentor would be able to step in and cover off your student team meeting for you so that the students can keep their momentum
  • Failing that, it’s also fine if you reach out to your student to see if re-scheduling that week is possible (note that many students are also working full-time, so re-scheduling might not be a viable possibility)
  • We ask that you do let your lead mentor know if this happens, so that they can relay to the appropriate Georgian College department who can follow up with students to ensure they understand the situation that you are still their mentor and will be back the following week


When does my onboarding begin?

  • You will receive communications from Georgian College the week of June 28th (1 week prior to the mentoring program beginning) that will contain all of the information and direction needed to access the training, modules and learn who your lead mentor, co-mentor and student teams are
  • If you are really eager to begin, we encourage you to visit our YouTube Channel, where you can access a wide variety of videos used during #ChangeTheNow as well as some workshops recorded from previous Changemaker in Residency Week editions


How do I access the onboarding modules?

  • Watch for an email the week of June 28th which will provide you with all of your login details and steps to access the onboarding process/modules

What if I don’t understand something?

  • Your lead mentor is always there to help support your understanding on a particular topic, and/or a challenge with your particular student team
  • You can also visit the training modules/videos as they will remain available, asynchronously, throughout the duration of #ChangeTheNow


What is Changemaker in Residency Week (CRW)?

  • Changemaker in Residency Week (CRW) is our touchstone event, held times 3 per year (once per semester), to help unite the global #ChangeTheNow community
  • CRW features:
    • 5 days of 60+ interactive virtual sessions
    • An exploration of 21st Century “Soft” skills (Ashoka Competencies)
    • Networking and learning with experts to support #ChangeTheNow projects
    • All in remote conversation around the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)


How do I sign-up for CRW Summer 2021?

  • As a mentor, you are invited to participate in as many CRW sessions and events as you would like
  • As soon as our CRW Summer 2021 website goes “live”, you can expect an email containing all of the information and direction you’ll need to sign-up and attend this celebration of changemaking


Where will the student projects be showcased?

  • Student projects will all be showcased at the conclusion of #ChangeTheNow
  • Currently, we are planning for an all-inclusive celebration of all participants and ideas during the week of August 16th
  • This is an optional event for you to attend... although we have found that students typically are very persuasive in encouraging you to join since you have played such a valuable role in their journey


How do I collect my digital mentor badge?

  • At the conclusion of #ChangeTheNow, you will receive communications on how to sign-up for, and access your digital mentor badge
  • You will be able to apply that certified badge to your LinkedIn Profile page, as well as other digital portfolios


How do I collect my digital mentor certificate?

  • At the conclusion of #ChangeTheNow, you will receive communications on how to sign-up for, access and download your digital mentor certificate
  • You will be able to save and print your certificate for inclusion in your professional portfolio
